Food and romance go hand in hand. It is probably the easiest to please your significant other with a great meal. Here are the top 10 romantic restaurants for an ideal candle light dinner in Delhi.

Delhi is at its prettiest in winter, as terraces open up and you can soak in some much-needed romance. I am firmly of the opinion that if the person is right, the place doesn’t matter. Not really. And even sharing a bowl of ramen at a neighbourhood eatery or some dodgy cake at a local café can be a totally worthwhile experience. Having said that, there can be nothing better than the times when both the person and the place (and obviously the food) are just right. That is a date worth remembering. Delhi, of course, is no Paris, Rome, Florence or even Samui. Yet, winter is the time when some of its al fresco terraces make for the perfect ambience for a romantic meal. Make the best of this time. For what it is worth, here is my pick of places with the perfect setting and food to make your time worth it. The companion, I leave to you!

    1. Tian, ITC Maurya

The perfect haute spot! If you really want to impress you date with good taste, look no further than this contemporary Asian restaurant. Chef Vikramjit Roy is a whiz and can plate up the most interesting, diverse flavours in a single dish to leave you suitably wowed. The plates are pretty too. The food is light, chic and unusual. There are intimate niches where you can dine in privacy, but make the most of the good season and book a table on the terrace. You get a glam view of the ridge, rare to find from any other hot spot in the city. Post the meal, you can sink into the couch on the terrace for the perfect after-meal drink. Oh, and the chef is also gifted when it comes to making cocktails. Make the best of this romantic dinner on the special day.

    2. Sevilla, Claridges

This is by far the most beautiful restaurant in the city, making your romantic dinner even more special. The perfect combination of outdoor and indoor seating, the charm is hard to escape in the evenings, especially with the soft lighting. Sit on the bar for some cocktails and then move into a cabana or a private table and load up on the wine and the sangria, order some tapas, grills and paella, which they have always done a fair job of. It is a lovely experience.

    3. Lavaash

This one is the new talk of the town. Chef Saby’s venture serves up Bengali-Armenian food and is thus quite an unusual choice that may earn you brownie points. But more than that, the setting is perfect for a romantic dinner. Restaurants near the Qutab are blessed with a salubrious setting. At Lavaash, there is not just a pretty balcony but an entire terrace with a grandstand view of the Qutab. Order your drinks, settle down with the bakes and you have a match made in heaven.

    4. JW Marriott, poolside

This is a recent discovery, but a worthy one. The cabanas at the JW Marriott Aerocity make for an exclusive date venue. If you want to splurge and do something really special, book one and order a special bespoke meal. Usually, the poolside serves food only from the coffee shop, but if you are setting this one up specially, do it right and get a meal tailored for the two of you. On Valentine's Day, the cabanas are in high demand, selling for as much as Rs 1 lakh per couple, that includes a meal, champagne and even a luxury car pick-up from anywhere in the city for the couple. The hotel’s most exclusive restaurant is Akira Back with a Japanese-Korean menu. Their tuna pizza and tacos are to die for. Make sure, these feature.

    5. Kylin

The Kylin terrace in Vasant Kunj is a much sought after venue in Delhi winters and for good reason. The space is done up beautifully, offering you a glimpse of the stars, privacy and some good comfort dining when it comes to food and drinks. The restaurant does good sushi, teppanyaki and dimsum. And there is a good cocktail list in place. Settle in for your private couple time.

    6. Amour Bistro

It is warm and intimate. The food is simple and perhaps this merits as a romantic restaurant because of the quiet location, where you are unlikely to run into too many people you know! Their pizzas are well known, but you can also pick from their interesting list of mains.

    7. ATM, Sundernagar

Stylish cocktails, chic eats and above all a beautiful terrace. There is also a parlour-like inner seating space that gives you the illusion of being in a home. Nothing can be cosier. You need to be a member, of course. But then that’s the price you may need to pay in the city for a bit of privacy!

    8. Spice Route, The Imperial

The ideal way to kick-start the evening would be with a drink in the courtyard and then move on for dinner at Spice Route, the restaurant, which even now, after all these years, cannot fail to impress you with its stunning interiors. The murals on the walls are vibrant, warm, Chef Veena’s food familiar, and the hotel itself has that old-world charm that nothing in newer Delhi can match.

    9. Dao

The evening I went there, it was clearly quite a preferred restaurant for couples. The location is central, the choice unusual enough, and the food is par quality. The dimsum are amongst the best in Delhi and rival Yauatcha, the more pop, kitty party option. There is also some great Thai food upstairs to complete the date.

Greater Kailash 1, N Block Market

    10. Indian Accent

I don’t have to say anything about this cosy, sophisticated restaurant. It is India’s best. And if you manage to get a reservation here, your date is bound to be impressed!
